Order Flow Trading Explained: Reading Aggression and Liquidity

Order flow is the tape behind the chart: how aggressively buyers hit asks, how much resting liquidity sits on the bid, and who is absorbing the other side. Traders who read flow act on what’s happening in the book — not after a candle has already moved.

The three layers of the market

Most traders look at price. Order-flow traders look at the order book — the resting bids and asks — and at prints: how much volume is lifting the offer versus hitting the bid.

Aggressive buying (market orders hitting asks) removes liquidity and pushes price up. Passive liquidity (limit orders) absorbs that aggression. The balance between the two tells you whether a move is being driven by real intent or thin books.

What to watch in order flow

Why venue design matters for order flow

Order flow is only as trustworthy as the venue it happens on. If a venue internalizes orders or routes flow to private market makers, the public book isn’t the real market. On BULK, every order — regardless of which interface routed it — executes on the same deterministic on-chain order book at the same best bid and offer.

BULK also gives maker liquidity a 25-millisecond window before taker transactions become eligible to match, which protects passive orders from latency gaming — relevant if you’re reading flow or providing it.

Where to watch live order flow

Live order flow and the trading interface for each market are available on BULK. This site’s pair pages link directly to the live view for that specific market, with code YETI (?ref=YETI) already inside the link — for example https://app.bulk.trade/trade/HYPE-USD?ref=YETI — so the account created through it is attributed to the referral automatically.

Frequently asked questions

What is order flow trading?

Order flow trading is reading the order book and trade tape — aggression, resting liquidity and absorption — to anticipate short-term price moves instead of trading lagging chart patterns alone.

How is BULK different from internalized venues for order flow?

BULK routes every order to one deterministic on-chain order book, so all participants see and trade at the same best bid and offer. Maker liquidity also gets a 25ms window before taker-capable transactions become eligible to match, protecting passive orders from latency gaming.

What is the 25ms taker speed bump on BULK?

On BULK, a maker order gets a 25-millisecond window before taker-capable transactions become eligible to match against it. The idea is to stop takers from racing resting maker liquidity purely on latency, which keeps the public book a fairer representation of real flow.

Do I need to watch order flow to trade perps?

No, but it helps. Order flow is one input alongside funding, open interest and volatility — together they describe positioning and intent better than price alone.

What is absorption in order flow?

Absorption is when price keeps testing a level but cannot break it because someone repeatedly eats the opposing flow. A level that keeps absorbing heavy selling is a tell that large buyers are present and the seller may soon be exhausted.

Where can I watch live order flow on BULK?

The live book and tape for every BULK market are on the trading interface. Open one through a code-YETI link such as https://app.bulk.trade/trade/BTC-USD?ref=YETI — aggression, resting size and the depth of the book are all visible before you place a trade.
